The Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Research Australia Centre for Research Excellence is calling for members to join a community reference group.
As a member of this group, you will have a say about future research on:
- the risks of alcohol consumption in pregnancy
- resources to support decisions related to drinking or not drinking alcohol during pregnancy
- effective treatment for people living with Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder
About the program
This is a national research program that aims to reduce the effects of alcohol use during pregnancy by; supporting families to reduce or stop alcohol use in pregnancy, increasing awareness of Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, finding effective treatment and improving access to services for children with Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder and their families.
About the position
The project is looking for 15- 20 members to help guide the research program. We are looking for people who are parents, pregnant or planning a family, carers, grandparents, as well as people with Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder and their parents/carers. This position is open Australia wide, you do not need to live in Western Australia to apply.
What am I expected to do?
Community Reference Group members will:
- attend virtual (phone-based) meetings
- help us to identify what to research and how to translate research into meaningful outcomes
- advise how research findings are fed back to the community
What skills or experience do I need?
No prior knowledge of research or health conditions is required. We are looking for applicants who are either:
- Concerned about the consumption of alcohol during pregnancy and potential impact on children and families
- A person with Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder or a parent/carer of a person with Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder who have an interest in diagnosis and treatment of FASD
- Young parents, grandparents or those planning to have a family
What is the time commitment?
This program of work will run for four years, and we anticipate holding four meetings per year. We understand that not all members will be able to commit to all meetings, so we are also interested in hearing from those who may only be able to make a partial commitment.
Where will meetings be held?
Meetings will be virtual (i.e. held over the phone), with the possibility of two face-to-face meetings held during the lifetime of the program.
What support is offered?
We offer $30 honorarium per hour for meetings attended. Free training and mentoring is offered by the Consumer and Community Health Research Network.
